Living in the Light
01/06/2025
“But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God.”
– John 3:21 (NIV)
In this verse, Jesus speaks of a stark contrast between light and darkness—a recurring theme throughout the Gospel of John. Light represents truth, goodness, and God’s presence, while darkness symbolizes sin, deceit, and separation from God. To “live by the truth” is to embrace God’s light, allowing His truth to illuminate every corner of our lives.
This is not just about avoiding sin but actively choosing to live transparently before God and others. The one who steps into the light is unafraid of exposure, not because they are sinless, but because they trust in God’s grace. They recognize that all good works are a result of God’s work in them. Living in the light is an acknowledgment that without Him, we can do nothing of eternal significance (John 15:5).
Consider for a moment the vulnerability of stepping into the light. It means being honest about our weaknesses and mistakes. It means allowing God to reveal areas of our lives we’d rather keep hidden—our pride, bitterness, selfishness, or fear. Yet, in that exposure, there is freedom. When we bring these things into the light, they lose their power over us. The light of Christ heals, restores, and makes us whole.
Here are three things you can apply to your life today so that you can “walk in the light” like Jesus.
Examine Your Heart
Take a moment to reflect on any areas of your life that you may be keeping in the shadows. Are there sins, fears, or habits you’ve been reluctant to surrender to God? Confess them today, trusting in His grace to forgive and transform you.
Live Transparently
Consider how you can live in a way that reflects God’s truth and love. This might involve reconciling with someone you’ve wronged, being honest about a struggle, or serving others with pure motives.
Trust in God’s Sovereignty
The verse reminds us that all we do in the light is ultimately “done in the sight of God.” This is both a comfort and a challenge. Trust that He sees your efforts, even the ones unnoticed by others, and let His approval be your motivation.
Living in the light is not about perfection; it is about direction. Are you moving closer to God’s light today?
Father, thank You for calling us into Your marvelous light. I confess the areas of my life where I have hidden from You. Shine Your light into my heart, exposing and removing anything that hinders my relationship with You. Help me to live by Your truth and reflect Your light in a dark world. Let all I do bring glory to You, for You alone are worthy. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
