Resting in God’s Work

02/13/2025

“For anyone who enters God’s rest also rests from their works, just as God did from his.”
— Hebrews 4:10 NIV

We live in a world that glorifies busyness. Productivity is often equated with worth, and many people find their identity in their work, accomplishments, and ability to keep going. Yet, today’s verse is an invitation that is radically different, it calls us to enter into God’s rest, ceasing from our own works as He did from His.

This verse points us back to Genesis when God completed His work of creation and rested on the seventh day (Genesis 2:2). His rest was not due to exhaustion but satisfaction, His work was finished, complete, and perfect. In the same way, the writer of Hebrews connects this idea to the spiritual rest we have in Christ. Just as God ceased from His work of creation, we are called to cease striving and trust in the finished work of Jesus.

The ultimate fulfillment of this rest is found in salvation. We no longer have to toil under the weight of trying to earn God’s approval through religious works, self-righteousness, or human effort. Jesus declared, “It is finished” (John 19:30) on the cross, signifying that everything needed for our redemption was accomplished. Through Him, we enter a rest that is not about inactivity but about trust—a deep, abiding confidence in His grace.

Yet, many believers struggle to live in this rest. We carry anxiety, stress, and burdens that God never intended for us to bear. We work tirelessly to prove ourselves, forgetting that our worth is already secure in Christ. Hebrews 4:10 reminds us that resting in God is not laziness; it is an act of faith. It is choosing to believe that His work is enough and that our role is to abide in Him.

This rest is not just for eternity, it is for today. When we trust God’s provision, we rest. When we surrender our worries, we rest. When we worship instead of worry, we rest. And when we align our hearts with His will instead of striving in our own strength, we find the peace that surpasses understanding.

Consider the following questions today as you begin your journey towards sabbath type rest.

Are there areas of your life where you are striving instead of resting in God’s grace?

What does entering God’s rest look like in your daily walk with Him?

How can you intentionally practice trusting in His finished work rather than relying on your own efforts?

Take a moment today to pause, breathe, and reflect on the truth that you are already loved, already accepted, and already secure in Christ. His rest is yours to receive, will you step into it?

Heavenly Father, I acknowledge that I often strive in my own strength instead of resting in Your finished work. Help me to lay down my burdens and enter the rest You have promised. Teach me to trust You completely, knowing that Your grace is sufficient. May my heart find peace in Your presence today and always. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
