The Heavenly Song of Peace
12/24/2024
“Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, ‘Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.’”
— Luke 2:13-14 (NIV)
In a dark field outside Bethlehem, an ordinary night turned extraordinary. Shepherds, considered among the lowliest in society, witnessed an incredible moment: the heavens opened, and a multitude of angels sang in unison. Their song echoed the profound truth of Christmas—God’s glory was revealed in the birth of Jesus, and peace was being offered to humanity.
The angels’ proclamation holds two powerful themes: glory to God and peace on earth. The birth of Christ brought a new revelation of God’s glory. It demonstrated His unrelenting love for the world and His desire to redeem what was broken. In Jesus, heaven touched earth, bridging the gap caused by sin.
The promise of peace “to those on whom His favor rests” reminds us that true peace is not the absence of trouble but the presence of God. This peace is a gift that begins with reconciliation with God through Jesus. It extends to our relationships with others, inviting us to be peacemakers in a broken world.
Take a moment to imagine the scene: the sky lit up with heavenly beings, their voices ringing out a message of hope. This moment wasn’t just for the shepherds—it’s for you. The song of the angels calls us to respond in worship and to carry the peace of Christ into every corner of our lives.
Here are three things you can start to do right now to be like the Shepards that dark night long ago.
Worship
Reflect on the glory of God revealed in Jesus. Spend time today praising Him for His love and grace.
Receive Peace
Invite the peace of Christ to calm your heart. Surrender your worries to Him, trusting in His presence and promises.
Be a Peacemaker
Look for opportunities to bring peace to a situation or relationship today. Let the message of Christ’s birth shape how you interact with others.
Throughout your day, repeat the angels’ song: “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace.” Let it remind you of the wonder of Christ’s birth and your call to be a messenger of His peace.
Lord, I join the angels in proclaiming, “Glory to God in the highest!” Thank You for sending Your Son, Jesus, to bring peace and salvation. Fill my heart with the peace that only You can give, and help me share it with those around me. May my life reflect Your glory as I seek to live in Your favor. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
