The Power of His Name

“The name of the Lord is a fortified tower; the righteous run to it and are safe.”
— Proverbs 18:10 (NIV)

In life, we face storms, unexpected news, overwhelming responsibilities, or situations that shake the ground beneath our feet. In these moments, we search for something solid, a refuge to protect us. Proverbs 18:10 reminds us that this refuge is found in the name of the Lord.

The imagery of a “fortified tower” speaks of strength, security, and peace. In biblical times, a fortified tower was a place where people fled during attacks. It was built high and strong, providing safety and an advantage over enemies. The verse isn’t saying the tower is nearby only for the righteous; instead, it’s available to anyone who turns to God, trusting in His name.

Think of a young child caught in a sudden downpour. The child runs, not to cover, not to strangers, but to their parent, instinctively knowing they will be protected and cared for. In the same way, when we face challenges, we can run to God. His name, representing His character, promises, and presence, is our shelter.

King David is a perfect example of this. When he faced Goliath, he didn’t rely on his sling or stones alone. He declared, “I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty” (1 Samuel 17:45). His confidence wasn’t in his abilities but in God’s power.

What challenges are you facing today? Is it fear of the unknown, financial stress, or relationship struggles? Run to the fortified tower of God’s name. Call on Him as Jehovah Jireh (the Lord our Provider) if you need provision. Cry out to Jehovah Shalom (the Lord our Peace) when anxiety overwhelms you.

Here are three ways that you can run to His name:

Prayer: Speak His name in faith, asking for His help.

Worship: Sing songs that declare His power and presence.

Scripture: Meditate on verses that remind you of His character.

Write down one name of God that speaks to your current situation. Throughout the day, repeat it in prayer, allowing His character to strengthen and comfort you.

Lord, thank You for being our fortified tower, a refuge in times of trouble. Teach us to run to You, trusting in Your name and not in our strength. Help us to rest in the safety of Your presence today. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
